Ironie

139 words2 min read88% known at C1

Ironie heißt: Ich sage das Gegenteil von dem, was ich eigentlich meine.

Irony means: I say the opposite of what I actually mean.

Und damit sage ich auch das Gegenteil von dem, was ich für wahr halte.

And with that I also say the opposite of what I believe to be true.

Auf den ersten Blick wäre das eigentlich eine Lüge.

At first glance, that would actually be a lie.

Was aber ist der Unterschied zwischen Lüge und Ironie?

But what is the difference between a lie and irony?

Bei der Lüge weiß nur der Sprechende, dass das, was er sagt, falsch ist.

In a lie, only the speaker knows that what he says is false.

Die Person jedoch, der die Lüge erzählt wird, weiß das nicht.

The person being told the lie, however, does not know that.

Im Unterschied zur Lüge wissen bei der Ironie beide, die an der Unterhaltung beteiligt sind, dass nicht das, was gesagt wird, gemeint ist, sondern das genaue Gegenteil.

In contrast to a lie, in irony both people involved in the conversation know that it is not what is said that is meant, but the exact opposite.

Zumindest sollten sie es beide wissen, denn sonst funktioniert die Ironie nicht.

At least they should both know it, because otherwise the irony does not work.

Wenn ein Kind seinen Vater fragt: „Fährst du mich nachher zum Training?“, und der antwortet mit „Nein“, obwohl er es sehr wohl fahren will, dann hat er im Grunde genommen gelogen.

When a child asks his father: 'Will you take me to training later?' and he answers 'No' even though he very much wants to take him, then he has basically lied.

Grammar in this text

Verb-final subordinate clause after 'dass'

dass nicht das, was gesagt wird, gemeint ist

In a subordinate clause introduced by 'dass', the finite verb moves to the end. Here, 'ist' is at the end, and the clause also contains a relative clause ('was gesagt wird') with its own verb-final order.

Passive voice with 'werden'

was gesagt wird

Passive voice is formed with 'werden' + past participle. 'wird' is the 3rd person singular present form of 'werden'. The subject is not the doer, but the thing affected by the action.

Konjunktiv II for hypothetical statements

Auf den ersten Blick wäre das eigentlich eine Lüge.

The Konjunktiv II of 'sein' is 'wäre'. It expresses a hypothetical or unreal situation, here presenting a counterfactual thought: 'At first glance it would actually be a lie.'

Relative clause with dative relative pronoun

der die Lüge erzählt wird

The relative pronoun 'der' refers to a feminine singular noun ('Person') in the dative case. It introduces a relative clause that also contains a passive construction ('erzählt wird').
