Erzählung
Erzählungen können wahr sein, müssen es aber nicht.
Stories can be true, but they don't have to be.
Wenn ein Kind seiner Mutter erzählt, was es in der Schule erlebt hat, ist das genauso eine Erzählung, wie wenn ein Schriftsteller eine Geschichte schreibt, in der sich ein Mann in einen Käfer verwandelt.
When a child tells their mother what they experienced at school, that is just as much a story as when a writer writes a story in which a man turns into a beetle.
Eine Erzählung, deren Handlung nicht wirklich passiert ist, kann einen anderen Zweck haben: Sie mag eine Moral haben, aus der man lernen soll, wie bei einem Märchen.
A story whose plot did not really happen can have a different purpose: it may have a moral that one is supposed to learn from, as in a fairy tale.
Sie kann aber auch für etwas Wirkliches stehen: In der Geschichte mit dem Käfer geht es vermutlich um die Beziehung eines Sohnes zu seinem Vater.
But it can also stand for something real: the story about the beetle is presumably about the relationship between a son and his father.
Geschrieben hat sie der Schriftsteller Franz Kafka.
It was written by the writer Franz Kafka.
Die Literatur kennt verschiedene Sorten Erzählungen.
Literature knows various kinds of stories.
Eine solche Erzählung, die etwas Unwirkliches als Ersatz für etwas Wirkliches erzählt, nennt man auch Parabel.
Such a story, which tells something unreal as a substitute for something real, is also called a parable.

Grammar in this text
Genitive relative pronoun 'deren'
Eine Erzählung, deren Handlung nicht wirklich passiert ist, kann einen anderen Zweck haben:
The relative pronoun 'deren' refers back to the feminine noun 'Erzählung' and shows possession: the action of the narrative. It is the genitive case of the relative pronoun and is used instead of 'von der'.
Prepositional relative clause with a preposition before the relative pronoun
aus der man lernen soll
The relative pronoun follows a preposition ('aus') and takes its case. Here 'der' is dative feminine because of 'aus' + Dative, referring to 'Moral'.
Reflexive verb with prepositional object (sich verwandeln in + Akkusativ)
in der sich ein Mann in einen Käfer verwandelt
The verb 'sich verwandeln' is used reflexively and is followed by 'in' + Akkusativ to indicate the result of the transformation. The reflexive pronoun 'sich' is in accusative.
