Grammar in this text

niemand counts as one person

Niemand arbeitet, und in der Stadt sind kaum Leute.

niemand is singular, so the verb is singular: niemand arbeitet, niemand kommt. English nobody works the same way.

Adjective endings after der, die, das

Mein Dad spricht über das vergangene Jahr.

After the definite article an adjective takes -e or -en. Neuter accusative takes -e: das vergangene Jahr, das neue Jahr.

am Ende + genitive

Am Ende der Nacht sind alle noch da.

am Ende is followed by the genitive: am Ende der Nacht, am Ende der Woche. der is the feminine genitive article.
