Common questions

What is in a German grammar test?

Three kinds of question, in blocks of five: gap-fill sentences that turn on a case ending, a verb form, a preposition or a connector (the Sprachbausteine part of the Goethe and telc exams); verb conjugation, where one form of a verb is given and you supply another; and word order, where every option is the same sentence and only one is German.

How do I get better at Sprachbausteine?

Read the whole sentence before looking at the options, and decide what kind of word is missing: a case ending, a verb form, a connector. Three of the four options are usually the right word class in the wrong form, so identifying the slot narrows it before you weigh meanings.

How do you know the other word orders are wrong?

German is a verb-second language: in a statement, exactly one block stands before the finite verb. Every wrong option puts two there, or sends the verb to the end of a sentence that has already filled its first position. The correct answer is a real sentence somebody wrote, unchanged.

Where do the conjugation answers come from?

The verb tables in the grammar section, which come from German Wiktionary. The answer is the table's entry for the person asked, and the wrong options are other entries from the same verb. A1 drills the present and the perfect, A2 adds the preterite and the future, B1 the Konjunktiv II, and the upper levels the pluperfect, the Konjunktiv I and the future perfect.
