Heute kaufe ich ein.
Today I am doing the shopping.
Der Supermarkt ist nicht weit, ich gehe zu Fuß.
The supermarket is not far, I walk.
Ich brauche Milch, Brot, Käse und Obst.
I need milk, bread, cheese and fruit.
Äpfel und Bananen sind heute billig.
Apples and bananas are cheap today.
Das Fleisch ist teuer, also nehme ich Fisch.
The meat is expensive, so I take fish.
Ich kaufe auch Gemüse für eine Suppe.
I also buy vegetables for a soup.
Ich bezahle und gehe wieder nach Hause.
I pay and go back home.

Separable verb: einkaufen

Heute kaufe ich ein.

Einkaufen splits in a main clause: the prefix ein goes to the end and the verb form kaufe stays in second position.

also = so, therefore

Das Fleisch ist teuer, also nehme ich Fisch.

German also means 'so/therefore', never English 'also'. After it the verb comes first in the second clause: also nehme ich.

nach Hause vs zu Hause

Ich bezahle und gehe wieder nach Hause.

Nach Hause is movement (going home), zu Hause is location (being at home).
