Am Abend war die Tür von unserem Haus auf.

In the evening the door of our house stood open.

Ich hatte Angst und blieb erst vor dem Haus.

I was afraid and at first stayed in front of the house.

Dann kam mein Freund und wir gingen zusammen in das Haus.

Then my friend came and we went into the house together.

Alles war in Ordnung, und niemand war da.

Everything was in order, and nobody was there.

Mein Kind hatte die Tür einfach vergessen.

My child had simply forgotten the door.

Jetzt sehe ich am Abend immer nach der Tür.

Now I always check the door in the evening.

Wir haben noch lange über den Abend gesprochen.

We talked about that evening for a long time afterwards.

sein and haben keep their simple past

Am Abend war die Tür von unserem Haus auf.

Everyday German tells a past story with the perfect, but sein and haben keep the simple past: war, hatte. Those two are worth learning early.

A past before the past

Mein Kind hatte die Tür einfach vergessen.

hatte plus a participle puts one event before another past one: the child had forgotten the door before the evening described here.

The participle closes the sentence

Wir haben noch lange über den Abend gesprochen.

haben stands second and gesprochen goes to the end. Everything in between — noch lange über den Abend — is the middle of the sentence.
