German Future Tense: werden, and Why the Present Usually Wins

B1 IntermediateFutur I und II in German2 questions below

The rulewerden plus an infinitive is the future, but German normally uses the present with a time word, and saves werden for prediction and emphasis.

The form

werden conjugated in second position, the main verb at the end as an infinitive: the same bracket a modal builds.

werdenExample
ichwerdeIch werde morgen anrufen.
duwirstDu wirst es schaffen.
er/sie/eswirdEs wird regnen.
wirwerdenWir werden sehen.
ihrwerdetIhr werdet es merken.
sie/SiewerdenSie werden zufrieden sein.

Why you will not use it much

With any time reference, German prefers the present. Ich fahre morgen nach Berlin is the normal sentence; Ich werde morgen nach Berlin fahren is grammatical but sounds either formal or emphatic.

SituationGermanComment
Scheduled futureDer Zug fährt um acht.Present, always.
Plan with a time wordNächstes Jahr ziehe ich um.Present is the default.
PredictionDas wird nicht funktionieren.werden earns its place.
Promise or resolutionIch werde dir helfen.werden adds weight.
Present assumptionEr wird wohl im Büro sein. Not future at all: see below.

werden as a guess about the present

This is the use worth knowing, because it looks like a future and is not. With wohl, wahrscheinlich or schon, werden expresses an assumption about now.

Futur II

werden plus a perfect infinitive: gemacht haben, gegangen sein. It is rare, and outside formal writing it appears almost only as an assumption about the past.

Where it goes wrong

Ich werde morgen zum Arzt gehen werden.

Ich werde morgen zum Arzt gehen.

One werden only. The bracket takes the conjugated werde at position two and a single bare infinitive at the end: repeating the auxiliary is a doubling that has no place in the construction.

Common questions

Do I need werden to talk about the future in German?

Usually not. With a time expression the present is the normal and preferred form: 'Morgen fahre ich nach Hamburg.' werden is reserved for predictions, promises and emphasis, or where no time word makes the future clear.

What does 'Er wird wohl krank sein' mean?

'He's probably ill': a statement about the present, not the future. werden plus wohl, wahrscheinlich or schon expresses an assumption, and this is one of the commonest uses of the form in everyday German.

Is Futur II ever used?

Rarely as a genuine future perfect, and mostly to guess about the past: 'Er wird es vergessen haben' means he's probably forgotten it. The literal reading, 'by then I will have finished', belongs mainly to formal writing.
