Common questions

How do I know when a German noun takes "das"?

Diminutives in -chen and -lein are always neuter, as are most nouns in -ment, -um, -ma and -tum, all infinitives used as nouns (das Essen), and most metals. Otherwise, learn the article with the noun.

How many German nouns are neuter?

In this 9,060-noun CEFR list, 1,618 take das, about 18%. Across German as a whole the split is roughly 46% die, 34% der and 20% das, so das is the least common case.

Do I really have to memorise the gender?

Yes, and it is easier if you never store the bare noun. Say and write "die Frage", not "Frage". The article then comes back as part of the word rather than as a separate decision. The article drill in the practice section tests exactly this.
