German Genitive Case: Possession, Endings and the Prepositions That Take It

B1 IntermediateGenitiv in German4 questions below

The ruleThe genitive marks possession and follows a small set of prepositions, and masculine and neuter nouns take an extra -s or -es of their own.

The forms

MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Articledesderdesder
Noun ending-(e)s-(e)s
Exampledes Mannesder Fraudes Kindesder Kinder

The -es goes on one-syllable nouns (des Mannes, des Kindes); longer nouns take a plain -s (des Lehrers, des Autos). Feminine nouns and plurals never change.

Possession

The genitive follows the thing possessed, the reverse of English. das Auto meines Bruders is my brother's car, in that order.

That last one matters. In speech the genitive of possession is steadily being replaced by von + dative, to the point that der Freund von meiner Schwester is entirely normal. In writing, and in every exam, the genitive is still expected.

Prepositions with the genitive

PrepositionMeansExample
wegenbecause ofwegen des Wetters
trotzdespitetrotz des Regens
währendduringwährend der Woche
statt / anstattinstead ofstatt eines Briefes
außerhalb / innerhalboutside / withininnerhalb eines Jahres
aufgrundon the basis ofaufgrund der Ergebnisse
währendduringwährend des Studiums

In casual speech all of these are heard with the dative (wegen dem Wetter), and it is so widespread that dictionaries note it. It is still non-standard, and B2 examiners still mark it.

Where it goes wrong

Wegen dem schlechten Wetter bleiben wir zu Hause.

Wegen des schlechten Wetters bleiben wir zu Hause.

wegen governs the genitive in standard German, so both the article and the noun change, and the adjective takes its weak -en ending in front of them.

Asking about it

The question word is wessen, and the relative pronouns are dessen and deren.

Common questions

Is the German genitive dying out?

In speech, largely: von plus the dative has taken over for possession, and dative after wegen and trotz is very common. In writing it is alive and expected, and every B2 and C1 exam tests it. Treat it as a register difference rather than an obsolescence.

Which German prepositions take the genitive?

wegen, trotz, während, statt/anstatt, innerhalb, außerhalb, aufgrund, anlässlich, hinsichtlich and a long tail of formal ones. The first four are the ones that matter for B1; the rest cluster in written and official German.

When does a masculine noun take -s and when -es in the genitive?

-es on one-syllable nouns and nouns ending in s, ß, z, x or a consonant cluster: des Mannes, des Hauses, des Platzes. Plain -s on longer nouns: des Lehrers, des Fensters, des Computers.
