B1 · Genitive

wegen des Wetters

wegen + genitive: because of

Formwegen + Genitiv

Meaning and usage

wegen means because of and takes the genitive: wegen des Wetters, wegen der Hitze, wegen meiner Arbeit. It usually stands before its noun. It names a cause with a noun; for a whole clause German uses weil: weil das Wetter schlecht ist.

In everyday speech you will often hear wegen with the dative: wegen dem Wetter. It is widespread, but in writing and in exams the genitive is the standard. With personal pronouns German uses special forms: meinetwegen, deinetwegen (because of me, because of you). A common mistake is wegen with a clause: wegen es regnet.

    Correct answer: Wegen

The gap is followed by a genitive noun phrase, des schlechten Wetters, so the word is the preposition wegen.

    • weil starts a clause with a subject and a verb at the end, not a noun phrase.
    • denn joins two main clauses and cannot stand before a noun phrase.
    • deshalb points to a consequence and is not followed by a genitive.
