B1 · Konjunktiv II

Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mitkommen.

unreal condition: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich …

FormWenn + … Konjunktiv II (Ende), Konjunktiv II + …

Meaning and usage

An unreal condition talks about something that is not the case now: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mitkommen (but I have no time). Both halves take Konjunktiv II. The wenn clause has its verb at the end, and the main clause starts with its verb: Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus kaufen.

Where a one-word form exists, use it rather than two würdes: hätte, wäre, könnte, wüsste: Wenn er die Wahrheit wüsste, würde er es uns sagen. The classic mistake is mixing in the indicative: Wenn ich reich wäre, kaufe ich ein Haus. A real condition, which may well happen, stays in the indicative: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich.

    Correct answer: hätte

The main clause has würde, so this is an unreal condition, and the wenn clause needs Konjunktiv II too: Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte.

    • hatte is the past indicative; the umlaut makes the Konjunktiv II, hätte.
    • habe is the indicative, for a real condition; with würde in the main clause both halves need Konjunktiv II.
    • hätten is plural; ich takes hätte.
