B1 · Infinitive with zu
Ich hoffe, bald zu kommen. / Ich hoffe, dass du kommst.
same subject: zu; different subject: dass
Formgleiches Subjekt: …, zu + Infinitiv | anderes Subjekt: …, dass …
Meaning and usage
After verbs like hoffen, vergessen, versprechen and sich freuen, you can go on with a zu-infinitive or with a dass-clause. The zu-infinitive only works when both parts have the same subject: Ich hoffe, bald zu kommen (I am the one who comes). When the second part has a different subject, you need dass: Ich hoffe, dass du bald kommst.
With the same subject both are possible, though the infinitive is shorter and more usual: Ich hoffe, dass ich bald komme is correct too. The mistake is trying to use zu when the subjects differ: I hope you come soon can only be Ich hoffe, dass du bald kommst.

Show answer
Correct answer: dass
The parents hope, but ich am the one coming: two different subjects, so the second part needs dass and the verb at the end.
- zu A zu-infinitive has no subject of its own and does not fit a clause with ich and a conjugated verb.
- ob starts an embedded yes/no question, as in Sie fragen, ob ich komme; hoffen is followed by dass.
- um … zu expresses a purpose and needs an infinitive, not a clause with komme.
