Form(es / Ort / Zeit) + wird … Partizip II (Ende)
Meaning and usage
German can put a verb in the passive even when it has no object, and the sentence then has no subject at all: Hier wird nicht geraucht (no smoking here), Am Sonntag wird nicht gearbeitet, Bei uns wird viel gelacht. It names an activity without saying who does it, which is why it is common on signs and in instructions.
The verb is always singular, wird or wurde. If nothing else stands in position 1, a placeholder es fills it: Es wird viel gearbeitet. As soon as another word takes position 1, the es disappears: Hier wird viel gearbeitet, not Hier wird es viel gearbeitet.
