B1 · Relative clauses

die Stadt, wo ich wohne

where: wo after a place

FormOrt, wo + Subjekt … Verb (Ende)

Meaning and usage

After a noun or a name for a place, wo can start a relative clause instead of in dem or in der: die Stadt, wo ich geboren bin, London, wo ich wohne. The verb goes to the end, as in every relative clause, and commas close the clause off.

With a place both forms are correct: der Ort, wo er wohnt and der Ort, in dem er wohnt. wo is very common in speech, and after a city or country name it is the usual choice. For people it is not standard: say der Mann, den ich kenne, not der Mann, wo ich kenne, which is regional speech.

    Correct answer: wo

The clause says where we met, and it refers back to a place, das Café, so it starts with wo. in dem would also be correct.

    • wohin is about a direction, but the clause says where something happened.
    • was follows words like alles or etwas, not a place.
    • wer is a question word for people and does not start a relative clause after a noun.
