Form…, ob + Subjekt … Verb (Ende)
Meaning and usage
A yes/no question has no question word. When you put it inside another sentence, German supplies one: ob, whether. The verb goes to the end: Kommt er? becomes Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt; Hast du Zeit? becomes Er fragt, ob du Zeit hast.
ob and wenn can both be if in English, but they never swap. ob asks a question, whether: Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt. wenn sets a condition: Wenn er kommt, freue ich mich. The common mistake is Ich weiß nicht, wenn er kommt for I don't know if he is coming.
