FormAls + Subjekt … Verb (Ende), Verb + Subjekt …
Meaning and usage
als means when for one event or one period in the past: Als ich zehn war, zogen wir nach Berlin, Als er mich sah, rannte er weg. It starts a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end. When the als clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb.
Use als for something that happened once, or for one period such as childhood: als ich jung war. For repeated past events and for the future German uses wenn, and in questions wann. The classic mistake is Wenn ich ein Kind war, …; one period in the past takes als.
