German Time Clauses: als, wenn, nachdem, bevor, während
The ruleals for a single event in the past, wenn for anything repeated or still to come, wann only in questions.
als, wenn or wann
English has one word, when, for all three, which is why this is the single most reliable place to lose a mark.
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| als | one specific event in the past | Als ich zehn war, zogen wir nach Berlin. |
| wenn | repeated events, any tense | Immer wenn es regnet, bleibt er zu Hause. |
| wenn | future or conditional | Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich. |
| wann | questions, direct or indirect | Wann kommst du? / Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt. |
A useful shortcut: if you could put whenever in the English, it is wenn. If the event happened exactly once and is over, it is als.
Where it goes wrong
Wenn ich ein Kind war, wohnten wir in Hamburg.
Als ich ein Kind war, wohnten wir in Hamburg.
A single stretch of past time (a childhood happens once), so als is required. Wenn would suggest you were repeatedly a child.
The rest of the set
| Conjunction | Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| nachdem | after | Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich los. |
| bevor | before | Bevor du gehst, ruf mich an. |
| während | while | Während sie kochte, deckte er den Tisch. |
| seit / seitdem | since | Seit ich hier wohne, fahre ich Rad. |
| bis | until | Warte, bis ich fertig bin. |
| sobald | as soon as | Sobald ich ankomme, melde ich mich. |
| solange | as long as | Solange es regnet, bleiben wir hier. |
nachdem forces a tense shift
The nachdem clause has to be one step further back in time than the main clause. Getting this wrong is the second half of this topic's difficulty.
| Main clause | nachdem clause | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Preterite | Past perfect | Nachdem er gegessen hatte, ging er. |
| Present | Perfect | Nachdem er gegessen hat, geht er. |
| Future / present | Perfect | Nachdem ich angekommen bin, rufe ich an. |
bevor does the opposite and needs no shift at all: both clauses stay in the same tense, because the bevor clause is by definition later.

Common questions
What is the difference between als, wenn and wann?
als introduces a single completed event in the past. wenn covers repeated events and anything present or future, and it doubles as 'if'. wann is only ever a question word, whether the question is direct ('Wann kommst du?') or embedded ('Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt').
Why does nachdem need the past perfect?
Because it marks one event as finished before another starts, and German makes that explicit in the tense. If the main clause is in the preterite, the nachdem clause goes into the past perfect: 'Nachdem er gegangen war, räumten wir auf.'
Do I use the perfect after 'seit'?
No: German uses the present if the situation is ongoing. 'Seit ich hier arbeite' is 'since I have been working here'. The perfect would imply the working has stopped.
