B1 · Time clauses

Warte, bis ich fertig bin.

bis: until, as a conjunction

Form…, bis + Subjekt … Verb (Ende)

Meaning and usage

As a conjunction, bis means until: one thing goes on up to the moment something else happens. It starts a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end: Warte, bis ich fertig bin, Bleib hier, bis ich dir sage, dass du gehen kannst, Wir haben noch ein paar Minuten, bis die Sitzung beginnt.

bis is also a preposition: bis morgen, bis zum Bahnhof. As a conjunction it needs a subject and a verb. English sometimes says before where German has bis: Es dauert nicht lange, bis er kommt (it won't be long before he comes). A common mistake is keeping the verb in second place: bis ich bin fertig.

    Correct answer: bis

The waiting lasts up to the moment I come back, so the clause starts with bis, with the verb at the end.

    • als is for one event in the past.
    • bevor means before; the waiting does not come before the return but lasts up to it.
    • seit looks back to a starting point in the past, but the return is still to come.
