B1 · Indirect questions
Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt.
embedded w-question: the verb goes to the end
Form…, W-Wort + Subjekt … Verb (Ende)
Meaning and usage
A question with a question word keeps that word when it goes inside another sentence, but the verb moves to the end: Wann kommt er? becomes Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt; Wo wohnst du? becomes Er fragt, wo du wohnst. This happens after verbs like wissen, fragen, sagen, verstehen and keine Ahnung haben.
The common mistake is keeping question order: Ich weiß nicht, wann kommt er. The question word works like a subordinating conjunction, so the verb has to go last. A comma separates the two clauses.

Kannst du mir sagen, wo ?
Show answer
Correct answer: der Bahnhof ist
wo starts an embedded question, which works like a subordinate clause: the verb ist goes to the end.
- ist der Bahnhof This is the order of a direct question; after sagen, wo the verb goes last.
- sei der Bahnhof sei is a reported-speech form, and the verb would still have to go to the end.
- der Bahnhof sein The clause needs a conjugated verb, not the infinitive sein.
