Formnicht / kein / nur + brauchen … zu + Infinitiv (Ende)
Meaning and usage
brauchen + zu-infinitive is used with a negative or with nur: Du brauchst nicht zu kommen (you don't need to come), Du brauchst keine Angst zu haben, Ihr braucht nur zu warten (you only need to wait). It is the usual negative of müssen: Du musst kommen, Du brauchst nicht zu kommen.
nicht müssen means the same and is also correct: Du musst nicht kommen. In everyday speech the zu after brauchen is often dropped, but in writing and in exams it belongs there. Without a negative or nur, brauchen means to need something: Ich brauche Geld.
