B1 · Time clauses

als / (immer) wenn

als for once in the past, wenn for every time

Formals: einmal in der Vergangenheit | (immer) wenn: wiederholt

Meaning and usage

English has one word, when, where German has two. als is for one event or one period in the past: Als ich ihn kennenlernte, war ich zwanzig. wenn is for something that happens again and again, in any tense, and for the future: Immer wenn ich ihn besuche, ist er im Bett, Jedes Mal, wenn sie hustete, hatte sie Schmerzen, Wenn ich nach Hause komme, rufe ich dich an.

A useful test: if you could say whenever in English, it is wenn; if it happened once and is over, it is als. immer or jedes Mal before wenn makes the repetition clear. The classic mistake is Wenn ich ein Kind war, wohnten wir in Hamburg: childhood is one period, so it must be als.

    Correct answer: Als

The first visit to Berlin happened once, in the past, so the clause starts with Als. For something that happened every time, it would be wenn.

    • wenn is for events that happen again and again, or in the future; a first visit happens once.
    • wann is a question word, not a time conjunction.
    • ob means whether.
