Meaning and usage
A group of prepositions takes the genitive. statt or anstatt means instead of: Ich hätte lieber einen Kaffee statt eines Tees. innerhalb and außerhalb mean inside and outside, and innerhalb also within a time: außerhalb der Stadt, innerhalb eines Jahres. aufgrund means because of, on the basis of: aufgrund des dichten Nebels.
innerhalb and außerhalb are often followed by von when there is no article: innerhalb von zwei Tagen. aufgrund belongs to written German; speech prefers wegen. A common mistake is the dative after these words: außerhalb dem Haus instead of außerhalb des Hauses.
