B1 · Time clauses

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, …

nachdem: after, one tense further back

FormNachdem + Subjekt … Partizip + hatte/war (Ende), Verb …

Meaning and usage

nachdem means after. It starts a subordinate clause, so the conjugated verb goes to the end: Nachdem er die Schule beendet hatte, ging er nach London. The action in the nachdem clause happens first and is finished before the main clause begins.

That is why the nachdem clause is one tense further back than the main clause. With a past main clause it takes the past perfect: Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich ins Bett. With a present or future main clause it takes the perfect: Nachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich ins Bett. The mistake is using the same tense in both: Nachdem ich aß, ging ich ins Bett.

    Correct answer: gesehen hatten

gingen is past, and the nachdem clause must be one step further back: the past perfect, gesehen hatten, with the auxiliary at the end.

    • sehen is present tense, but the main clause is in the past.
    • gesehen haben The perfect goes with a present main clause, as in Nachdem wir das Spiel gesehen haben, gehen wir; here the main clause is past.
    • sahen nachdem needs a tense one step further back than the main clause, not the same past tense.
