B1 · Time clauses

Bevor du gehst, …

bevor: before (something happens)

Form…, bevor + Subjekt … Verb (Ende)

Meaning and usage

bevor means before and starts a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end: Ruf mich an, bevor du gehst, Schau nach links und rechts, bevor du die Straße überquerst. The clause can also come first: Bevor du gehst, ruf mich an.

Unlike nachdem, bevor needs no change of tense: both clauses usually stay in the same tense. English often uses -ing after before (before leaving), but German needs a full clause with a subject: bevor ich gehe. Do not confuse bevor with the preposition vor + noun: vor dem Essen, but bevor wir essen.

    Correct answer: bevor

First the teeth, then bed: the clause names the later action and starts with bevor.

    • nachdem would put going to bed first, and with a present main clause it would need the perfect: nachdem ich ins Bett gegangen bin.
    • vor is a preposition and needs a noun, as in vor dem Schlafen, not a clause.
    • als is for one event in the past, not for something you do now.
