B1 · Konjunktiv II

Du hättest mich anrufen sollen.

should have, could have: hätte … machen sollen

Formhätte (Position 2) … Infinitiv + Modalverb im Infinitiv (Ende)

Meaning and usage

When a modal verb is in the past Konjunktiv II, the end of the sentence has two infinitives: the main verb and then the modal, with hätte before them. Du hättest mich anrufen sollen (you should have called me), Wir hätten noch ein paar Tage bleiben sollen, Ohne die Karte hätten wir den Weg nicht finden können.

The modal looks like an infinitive here, not a participle: hätte kommen können, not hätte kommen gekonnt. This is the shape of every should have, could have and would have had to in German. In a subordinate clause hätte comes before both infinitives: …, dass du mich hättest anrufen sollen.

    Correct answer: sollen

Should not have said is hätte … nicht sagen sollen: hätte + two infinitives at the end.

    • soll is the present tense and cannot follow hätte at the end.
    • sollte is a conjugated form; the end of the sentence needs the infinitive.
    • gesollt is the participle of sollen, but next to another infinitive German uses sollen.
