B1 · Infinitive with zu

Es ist wichtig, jeden Tag zu üben.

it is important, hard or nice to do something

FormEs ist + Adjektiv, … zu + Infinitiv (Ende)

Meaning and usage

To say that doing something is important, difficult or nice, German uses es ist + adjective and a zu-infinitive at the end: Es ist wichtig, jeden Tag zu üben, Es ist schön, dich zu sehen, Es war nicht leicht, sein Haus zu finden. The infinitive clause says what is important or difficult.

The infinitive clause can also come first, and then es disappears: Jeden Tag zu üben ist wichtig. A common mistake is leaving out zu, as in Es ist wichtig, jeden Tag üben. In this pattern the second verb needs zu.

    Correct answer: zu backen

Es ist … schwer is followed by a zu-infinitive that says what is hard: ein gutes Brot zu backen.

    • zu backt After zu the verb stays in the infinitive, with no personal ending.
    • gebacken is a participle and needs an auxiliary; this clause needs zu + infinitive.
    • backen Without zu the infinitive does not fit here; the pattern needs zu backen.
