B1 · Relative clauses

alles, was …; das, was …

was as a relative pronoun: alles, was; das, was

Formalles / etwas / nichts / das, was … Verb (Ende)

Meaning and usage

After alles, etwas, nichts, vieles and das, the relative pronoun is was: Alles, was er sagt, ist wahr, Gibt es etwas, was ich tun kann?, Ich bin nicht stolz auf das, was ich getan habe. The same goes for a neuter superlative used as a noun: das Beste, was ich je gegessen habe. As in every relative clause, the verb goes to the end.

was can also refer back to a whole clause rather than to one noun: Er kam zu spät, was mich ärgerte. A common mistake is alles, das ich weiß; the standard form is alles, was ich weiß.
