Formsein (Position 2) … Partizip II (Ende)
Meaning and usage
German separates an action from its result. werden + participle describes the action: Die Tür wird um acht Uhr geöffnet (someone opens it at eight). sein + participle describes the state afterwards: Die Tür ist geöffnet (it is open). Das Museum ist montags geschlossen. Die Arbeit ist erledigt.
English uses is for both, so learners mix them up. A useful test: if you can ask when does it happen? or who does it?, it is an action and needs werden. If the sentence describes how things are, use sein. Das Fenster ist geschlossen says it is closed; Das Fenster wird geschlossen says someone is closing it.
