Meaning and usage
In the preterite the passive is wurde + participle: Das Haus wurde 1900 gebaut, Der Mann wurde ins Krankenhaus gebracht. It is the usual past passive, in writing and in speech. In the plural it is wurden: Die Fenster wurden geputzt.
With a dative object the verb stays singular and the dative stays dative: Mir wurde gesagt, dass … (I was told that …). English turns me into I, but German cannot: Ich wurde gesagt is wrong. Do not confuse the passive wurde + participle with wurde + noun or adjective, which means became: Er wurde Arzt.
