B1 · Konjunktiv II

käme, ginge, wüsste, gäbe

one-word Konjunktiv II: käme, ginge, wüsste

FormPräteritumstamm + Umlaut + -e: kam → käme

Meaning and usage

Strong verbs have a one-word Konjunktiv II, built from the preterite: add an umlaut where possible and the ending -e. kam becomes käme, gab becomes gäbe, wusste becomes wüsste; ging has no vowel to umlaut and becomes ginge. Hätte ich Zeit, käme ich mit. Würde es dich stören, wenn ich das heute täte?

In everyday speech würde + infinitive has replaced most of these: ich würde kommen is commoner than ich käme. A few are still common in speech, above all wüsste (Ich wüsste gern, …) and gäbe (Es gäbe noch eine Möglichkeit). You will meet the others in writing. Weak verbs have no separate form: their Konjunktiv II looks like the preterite.

    Correct answer: wüsste

Ich wüsste gern … is the polite way to say I'd like to know. wüsste is the Konjunktiv II of wissen: the preterite wusste + umlaut.

    • wusste is the past indicative, I knew, which does not go with gern here.
    • wisse is a reported-speech form (Konjunktiv I), not used for a polite wish.
    • weiß is the present; Ich weiß gern is not how German asks politely.
