B1 · Verbs with prepositions

Ich freue mich darauf, dich zu sehen.

darauf, dass …: pointing ahead to a clause

FormVerb + da(r) + Präposition, dass … / zu + Infinitiv

Meaning and usage

When the object of a verb with a fixed preposition is a whole clause, the da- word stands in the main clause as a placeholder, and the dass clause or zu-infinitive follows: Wir warten darauf, dass er kommt, Ich freue mich darauf, dich zu sehen, Ich denke daran, ein Auto zu kaufen.

The placeholder keeps the preposition of the verb: warten auf gives darauf, denken an gives daran, sich freuen über gives darüber. With some verbs it can be left out (Ich freue mich, dich zu sehen); with warten it is usual. A common mistake is putting the bare preposition before the clause: Ich warte auf, dass er kommt.

    Correct answer: darauf

sich freuen auf + a whole clause: darauf stands in the main clause, and the zu-infinitive follows.

    • auf alone needs a noun after it; before a clause it becomes darauf.
    • dafür contains für, which does not go with sich freuen.
    • woran is a question word, not a placeholder in the main clause.
