Formtrotz + Genitiv
Meaning and usage
trotz means despite and takes the genitive: trotz des Regens, trotz der Kälte, trotz seiner Fehler. It names an obstacle that did not stop something: Er ist trotz des schlechten Wetters gekommen.
trotz is followed by a noun. For a whole clause German uses obwohl (obwohl es regnete), and the adverb trotzdem means all the same. trotz with the dative (trotz dem Regen) is common in speech but non-standard in writing; the fixed phrase trotz allem is correct. A common mistake is trotz with a clause: trotz es regnete.

Correct answer: trotz
A genitive noun phrase follows, seiner Erkältung, and the cold did not stop him: trotz seiner Erkältung.
- trotzdem is an adverb and cannot stand before a noun phrase.
- obwohl needs a clause: obwohl er erkältet war.
