B1 · The passive

Das Haus wird gebaut.

present passive: wird gemacht

Formwerden (Position 2) … Partizip II (Ende)

Meaning and usage

The passive puts the focus on what happens, not on who does it. In the present it is werden + the past participle at the end: Das Auto wird repariert (the car is being repaired), Englisch wird in vielen Ländern gesprochen. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject: Der Mechaniker repariert das Auto becomes Das Auto wird repariert.

werden agrees with the new subject: Das Auto wird repariert, Die Autos werden repariert. English uses is, so learners write Das Auto ist repariert; that describes a finished state, not the action going on. For the action German needs werden.
