B1 · Konjunktiv II

Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Zeit.

wishes and regrets: Ich wünschte …, Wenn ich nur …

FormIch wünschte, + Konjunktiv II | Wenn … doch/nur … Konjunktiv II!

Meaning and usage

Wishes about something that is not true now use Konjunktiv II: Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Zeit (I wish I had more time), Ich wünschte, ich könnte morgen mitkommen. After Ich wünschte the second clause usually keeps main-clause order, as after ich glaube.

A wish or a regret can also stand on its own as a wenn clause with doch or nur and the verb at the end: Wenn ich nur so ein Kleid hätte!, Wenn ich doch nur auf euren Rat gehört hätte! Regrets about the past take hätte or wäre + participle. A common mistake is the indicative: Ich wünschte, ich habe mehr Zeit.
