B1 · Verbs with prepositions

darauf, daran, darüber

darauf, daran, darüber: for things

Formda(r) + Präposition (Sache) | Präposition + Pronomen (Person)

Meaning and usage

When a verb with a fixed preposition refers back to a thing, the preposition fuses with da-, or dar- before a vowel: Wartest du auf den Bus? Ja, ich warte darauf. Hast du an den Termin gedacht? Ja, ich habe daran gedacht. Other forms are dafür, damit, davon, dagegen and dabei.

For people the preposition keeps a normal pronoun: Ich warte auf ihn. A common mistake is a preposition + es for a thing: Ich denke an es instead of Ich denke daran. The da- form works with any preposition that refers to a thing: Das Eis ist so dick, dass man darauf gehen kann.

    Correct answer: darüber

sich freuen über refers back to a thing, the new bike, so the preposition fuses with dar-: Ich freue mich darüber.

    • über ihn ihn is masculine and would refer to a person here; Fahrrad is a neuter thing.
    • worüber asks a question or starts a clause; it does not refer back to the bike.
    • über es German does not use a preposition + es for a thing; it uses darüber.
