FormAußerdem / Sonst + Verb + Subjekt …
Meaning and usage
außerdem adds a further point: besides, in addition. Die Wohnung ist zu teuer. Außerdem ist sie zu klein. sonst says what will happen if something is not done: otherwise, or else. Gehen wir jetzt los! Sonst kommen wir zu spät. Both are connecting adverbs: in position 1 the verb comes straight after them.
sonst has other everyday meanings too: else in Was sonst noch?, and usually in früher als sonst. A common mistake is subject-verb order after these words: Sonst wir kommen zu spät; it must be Sonst kommen wir zu spät.

Correct answer: sonst

- außerdem adds a further point; it does not say what happens if you don't.
- trotzdem would mean you'll catch a cold anyway, which is not the warning meant here.
- deshalb would make catching a cold the result of the jacket.
