B1 · Time clauses

Während sie kochte, …

während: while, two things at the same time

Form…, während + Subjekt … Verb (Ende)

Meaning and usage

As a conjunction, während means while: two things happen at the same time. It starts a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end: Ich traf einige Freunde, während ich auf den Bus wartete, Während du weg warst, habe ich aufgeräumt.

während is also a preposition with the genitive, during: während der Woche. As a conjunction it is followed by a subject and a verb. It can also mean whereas, contrasting two things: Er kocht gern, während sie lieber liest. A common mistake is main-clause order after it: während ich wartete auf den Bus.

    Show answer

    Correct answer: während

Both things happen at the same time, as gleichzeitig says, so the clause starts with während, with the verb at the end.

    • nachdem puts one thing after the other, which contradicts gleichzeitig.
    • bevor puts one thing before the other, but gleichzeitig says they happen together.
    • als is for one event in the past, but this sentence is in the present.
