B1 · Genitive

des Mannes, der Frau, der Kinder

genitive: des Mannes, der Frau, der Kinder

FormNomen + des/eines + Nomen-(e)s | der + Nomen (f., Pl.)

Meaning and usage

The genitive links one noun to another, usually as the owner: das Auto meines Bruders (my brother's car), der Titel des Buches, das Haus meiner Eltern. It follows the noun it belongs to, the reverse of English 's. Masculine and neuter nouns take des or eines, and the noun adds -s or -es: des Lehrers, des Buches. Feminine nouns and plurals take der, and the noun does not change: der Frau, der Kinder.

One-syllable nouns usually take -es (des Mannes, des Tages), longer ones -s (des Lehrers, des Autos). The common mistake is leaving off the noun's own ending: das Auto meines Bruder. In speech von + dative often replaces the genitive (das Auto von meinem Bruder), but in writing and in exams the genitive is expected.

    Correct answer: meines Bruders

Bruder is masculine, so the genitive is meines Bruders: the article ends in -es and the noun adds -s.

    • mein Bruders mein has no ending here; the genitive needs meines.
    • meines Bruder The article is right, but a masculine noun takes -s in the genitive: Bruders.
    • meinem Bruders meinem is dative; the genitive is meines.
