Common questions
How do I know when a German noun takes "das"?
Diminutives in -chen and -lein are always neuter, as are most nouns in -ment, -um, -ma and -tum, all infinitives used as nouns (das Essen), and most metals. Otherwise, learn the article with the noun.
How many German nouns are neuter?
In this 9,060-noun CEFR list, 1,618 take das — about 18%. Across German as a whole the split is roughly 46% die, 34% der and 20% das, so das is the least common case.
Do I really have to memorise the gender?
Yes, and it is easier if you never store the bare noun. Say and write "die Frage", not "Frage" — the article then comes back as part of the word rather than as a separate decision. The article drill in the practice section tests exactly this.
