Common questions

How do I know when a German noun takes "die"?

Endings are the most reliable signal: -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, -ik, -ei and -ur are feminine almost without exception, as are most nouns ending in -e. Beyond that, learn the article with the noun rather than guessing.

How many German nouns are feminine?

In this 9,060-noun CEFR list, 3,609 take die — about 40%. Across German as a whole the split is roughly 46% die, 34% der and 20% das, so die is a common case.

Do I really have to memorise the gender?

Yes, and it is easier if you never store the bare noun. Say and write "die Frage", not "Frage" — the article then comes back as part of the word rather than as a separate decision. The article drill in the practice section tests exactly this.
