Common questions

How do I know when a German noun takes "die"?

Endings are the most reliable signal: -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, -ik, -ei and -ur are feminine almost without exception, as are most nouns ending in -e. Beyond that, learn the article with the noun rather than guessing.

How many German nouns are feminine?

In this 9,060-noun CEFR list, 3,609 take die, about 40%. Across German as a whole the split is roughly 46% die, 34% der and 20% das, so die is a common case.

Do I really have to memorise the gender?

Yes, and it is easier if you never store the bare noun. Say and write "die Frage", not "Frage". The article then comes back as part of the word rather than as a separate decision. The article drill in the practice section tests exactly this.
