German als ob, als wenn, als: Saying What Something Seems Like

The ruleals ob takes a subjunctive and sends the verb to the end; bare als takes a subjunctive and puts the verb immediately after it.

The three forms

All three mean the same. The bare als version is the most elegant and the most common in writing, and its word order is unique in German: nothing else puts a finite verb directly after a subordinating conjunction.

Which subjunctive

Konjunktiv II is the default and always safe. Konjunktiv I appears in careful written German. The indicative is heard in speech but marks the comparison as real rather than hypothetical, which is usually not what is meant.

Sie sieht aus, als ob sie krank wäre. She looks as though she's ill. Konjunktiv II: neutral and standard.
Sie sieht aus, als sei sie krank. She looks as though she's ill. Konjunktiv I: written register.
Es sieht aus, als würde es regnen. It looks like rain. würde for verbs with no distinctive form.

The past

As everywhere in Konjunktiv II, the past is hätte or wäre plus the participle.

Er tat so, als ob nichts passiert wäre. He acted as if nothing had happened.
Sie sah aus, als hätte sie geweint. She looked as though she'd been crying. Bare als, verb second.

Bare als is followed directly by the finite verb. If you want subject-then-verb order you need the full als ob, with the verb at the end: als ob er alles wüsste.
