Formaussehen / so tun / scheinen / klingen, als (ob) …
Meaning and usage
A few verbs regularly introduce an als ob or als clause: aussehen (look as if), so tun (pretend), scheinen, wirken and klingen. Sie sieht aus, als ob sie krank wäre. Er tat so, als ob nichts passiert wäre. Es klingt, als hätte er recht.
so tun needs its so: Er tut so, als … (he pretends). With es as the subject, these verbs describe a general impression: Es sieht so aus, als würde es regnen. A common mistake is a dass clause instead: Er tut so, dass er schläft has to be Er tut so, als würde er schlafen.
