In Österreich spricht man Deutsch.

man: one, people, you, instead of a passive

Formman + Verb (3. Person Singular) | einen (Akk.), einem (Dat.)

Meaning and usage

man is a subject meaning people in general, one, you or they. It keeps the sentence active while leaving the doer unnamed, which is why German uses it far more than English uses one: In Österreich spricht man Deutsch (German is spoken in Austria), Wie schreibt man das? (how is that written?). The verb is third person singular.

man has its own forms in other cases: einen in the accusative and einem in the dative: Das macht einen müde, Das kann einem passieren. The possessive is sein. A common mistake is switching to er later in the sentence: Wenn man müde ist, sollte er schlafen must be sollte man schlafen.

    Correct answer: einen

man as an object takes the accusative einen: Dieser Lärm macht einen ganz nervös.

    • eines is not a form of man.
    • man is only the subject form; as an object it becomes einen.
    • einem is the dative, but machen takes an accusative object here.
