FormEgal, + W-Wort / ob … Verb (Ende), Hauptsatz
Meaning and usage
egal + a question word or ob means no matter: Egal, wie sehr er sich bemühte, es klappte nicht, Egal, was du sagst, ich bin davon überzeugt, Ich werde es tun, egal ob ihr einverstanden seid oder nicht. The clause after egal has its verb at the end.
It is the everyday alternative to the auch immer pattern. As with that pattern, a main clause that follows can keep its normal order: Egal, was du sagst, ich bleibe. The comma after egal is common but often left out. Es ist mir egal, ob … (I don't care whether …) uses the same word.
