B2 · Modal verbs for assumptions
Er muss krank gewesen sein.
assumptions about the past: muss gewesen sein
FormModalverb (Präsens) … Partizip II + haben/sein (Ende)
Meaning and usage
To make an assumption about the past, the modal stays in the present and the infinitive goes into the perfect: participle + haben or sein. Er muss krank gewesen sein (he must have been ill), Sie kann es nicht gewusst haben (she can't have known), Der Scheck muss bei der Post verloren gegangen sein, Das könnte ein Fehler gewesen sein.
A common mistake is putting the modal into the past for a deduction made now: Er musste krank sein usually reads as he had to be ill, an obligation. For a deduction made now about the past, the modal stays in the present and only the infinitive changes. The choice of haben or sein follows the perfect of the main verb: gesagt haben, gegangen sein.

Correct answer: vergessen haben
The speaker concludes something about the past, so the modal stays in the present and the infinitive goes into the perfect: Er muss sein Handy zu Hause vergessen haben.
- vergessen alone after muss would be present: he has to forget, which makes no sense.
- vergessen sein vergessen takes haben in the perfect, not sein.
- vergaß is a conjugated past form and cannot follow muss.
