B2 · Conditional clauses

…, es sei denn, …

es sei denn: unless

FormHauptsatz, es sei denn, + Hauptsatz | es sei denn, dass … Verb (Ende)

Meaning and usage

es sei denn means unless. It follows the main clause and names the one case in which the main statement does not hold: Ich gehe nicht, es sei denn, es hört auf zu regnen, Ich kann Ihnen nicht helfen, es sei denn, Sie sagen mir die Wahrheit.

After es sei denn you can use normal main-clause order, with a comma, or a dass clause with the verb at the end: es sei denn, dass es regnet. It always comes second, after the main clause. It is a fixed phrase, and its sei does not change.
