B2 · Participles as adjectives
Er kam lachend herein.
Partizip I as an adverb: Er kam lachend herein
FormVerb + Partizip I (ohne Endung)
Meaning and usage
Partizip I can also describe how someone does something. Then it has no ending: Die Kinder liefen lachend hintereinander her, Sie legte schweigend den Hörer auf, Die Kellnerin begrüßte mich lächelnd, Als sie die Nachricht hörte, brach sie weinend zusammen.
English often uses an -ing form for this, but German cannot use Partizip I as a main verb: there is no ich bin arbeitend for I am working. A participle can also open the sentence with its own words: Fröhlich vor sich hin pfeifend, lief er die Straße entlang. Some forms work as fixed adverbs: dankend (with thanks), schweigend (in silence).
