FormJe + Komparativ … Verb (Ende), desto + Komparativ + Verb …
Meaning and usage
je …, desto links two comparisons: Je länger ich warte, desto nervöser werde ich (the longer I wait, the more nervous I get). The je half is a subordinate clause with the verb at the end. The desto half is a main clause: desto and the comparative take position 1, so the verb comes straight after them.
The comparative stands directly after je and after desto: Je älter man wird, desto mehr Probleme hat man. umso can replace desto: Je mehr Menschen kommen, umso besser wird die Stimmung. The classic mistake is Je mehr ich lerne, desto ich verstehe besser; it must be desto besser verstehe ich.
