German Paired Connectors: je … desto, nicht nur … sondern auch, entweder … oder
The ruleTwo-part connectors bracket a whole relationship, and je … desto is the only construction in German where a subordinate clause is followed by verb-second rather than verb-first.

weder … noch needs no other negative
The construction is already negative, so adding nicht or kein cancels it. Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld, not keine Zeit.
zwar … aber
The commonest of the set in speech, and it has no clean English equivalent. It concedes a point before overriding it, and it makes an argument sound balanced. zwar sits inside the first clause rather than opening it.
- Ich habe zwar wenig Zeit, aber ich helfe dir. I don't have much time, but I'll help you.
- Das Hotel war zwar teuer, aber es hat sich gelohnt. The hotel was expensive, but it was worth it.
je … desto, and its strange word order
This one has a grammar of its own. The je half is a subordinate clause: verb at the end. The desto half is a main clause with desto plus a comparative in first position, so the verb comes second. And the comparative sits directly after je and after desto, never anywhere else.
- Je länger ich warte, desto nervöser werde ich. The longer I wait, the more nervous I get. warte final; werde second.
- Je mehr Menschen kommen, umso besser wird die Stimmung. The more people come, the better the mood. umso is an exact synonym of desto.
- Je früher, desto besser. The sooner the better. Both verbs droppable when obvious.
Where it goes wrong
Je mehr ich lerne, desto ich verstehe besser.
Je mehr ich lerne, desto besser verstehe ich.
The comparative has to follow desto immediately: they form one unit occupying first position. The verb then takes second place and the subject follows it.
What they buy you
In a B2 or C1 writing task these are among the cheapest ways to raise the register. A paragraph built on und and aber reads as A2 however accurate it is; the same content with zwar … aber and nicht nur … sondern auch reads as an argument.

How does 'je … desto' work in German?
The je clause is subordinate, so its verb goes last. The desto clause is a main clause whose first position is filled by desto plus a comparative, so the verb comes second: 'Je mehr ich lerne, desto besser verstehe ich.' umso is an exact synonym of desto.
Do I need 'nicht' with 'weder … noch'?
No: the pair is already negative. 'Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld' is correct; adding kein or nicht would produce a double negative that cancels itself out.
What does 'zwar … aber' mean?
It concedes something and then overrides it. 'Das Auto ist zwar alt, aber zuverlässig' means the car is old, admittedly, but reliable. zwar has no direct English translation and sits inside the first clause rather than opening it.
